چکیده

We describe a system that can listen to a performance of Indian music and recognize the raag, the fundamental melodic framework that Indian classical musicians improvise within. In addition to determining the most likely raag being performed, the system displays the estimated the likelihood of each of the other possible raags, visualizing the changes over time. The system computes the pitch-class distribution and uses a Bayesian decision rule to classify the resulting twelve dimensional feature vector, where each feature represents the relative use of each pitch class. We show that the system achieves high performance on a variety of sources, making it a viable tool for interactive performance.

Handel, a Free-Hands Gesture Recognition System

I describe here a real-time vision-based gesture recognition system used in interactive computer music performances. The performer moves his hands in a video-camera capture area, the camera sends the signal to a video digitizer card plugged into a computer. By processing the reconstructed images of the performer’s hands in movement the computer detects x-y positions, shape (posture) and angle o...

Real - Time Recognition of Improvisations with Adaptive Oscillators and a Recursive Bayesian Classifier

Understanding and following musical improvisations with a computer requires methods different from those needed when following score-based musical performances. This paper discusses questions related to interactive music systems for the recognition and accompaniment of tonal improvisations. This includes discussion about rhythmic parsing and harmonic analysis with a recursive Bayesian classifie...

Wireless technology in gesture controlled computer generated music

We here describe the experience of researchers and artists involved in the activities of the “computer ART lab” (cART lab) of the Italian National Council of Research (C.N.R.) in Pisa, regarding the “wireless technology” developed for controlling in real-time interactive multimedia performances. The most relevant devices and systems developed at cART lab for gesture recognition to be used for g...

Extending Content-Based Recommendation: The Case of Indian Classical Music

We describe a series of experiments that attempt to create a content-based similarity model suitable for making recommendations about North Indian classical music (NICM). We introduce a dataset (nicm2008) consisting of 897 tracks of NICM along with substantial ground-truth annotations, including artist, predominant instrument, tonic pitch, raag, and parent scale (thaat). Using a timbre-based si...

Improvising Computer Music: an Approach

I describe here my experience in interactive and improvised electro-acoustic music after having developed both hardware and software tools using which I compose and perform music. The research in the whole finds the roots in my active involvement in jazz music. This paper analyses the jazz approach to improvisation in terms of the involved components and emphasizes the importance of expressiven...
